Cheshunt’s George Lutaaya named in the latest Uganda international squad.

07 Mar 2017

Great news for George Lutaaya and Cheshunt FC as the Ambers midfielder was named this week in the Uganda international squad for their forthcoming friendly matches next week.

George flies out to Nairobi Kenya, on Sunday to join up with the squad assembled by the Serbian manager of Uganda, Milutin Sredojević, as he looks further afield after a disappointing display in the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, where Uganda, nicknamed ‘The Cranes’ were knocked out at the group stages after collecting only a single point from their last game.  The Cranes results this year to date are mixed, and with important 2018 World Cup qualifiers versus Egypt, Ghana and Congo  later this year, Sredojevic is taking the opportunity to look at fresh talent in forthcoming friendlies against Kenya & Costa Rica (tbc).

Friendly Tunisia  2–0  Uganda

Friendly Uganda  3–1  Slovakia

Friendly Ivory Coast  3–0  Uganda

AFCON Ghana  1–0  Uganda

AFCON Egypt  1–0  Uganda

AFCON Uganda  1–1  Mali

The Cranes best performance to date has been to be runners up in the Africa Nations Cup in 1978, they are currently ranked 75 in the Fifa rankings, OK for some perspective that’s just behind Scotland (67) and ahead of Norway (81).

While George will be swapping the Amber & Black of Cheshunt for the Red & White of Uganda. We will be checking the archives for previous Cheshunt internationals, Darrell Cox made the Grenada squad for a World Cup qualifier but didn’t play, & Iain Dowie played as an international, but not while at Cheshunt, could George be the first current player to make an international appearance on the pitch , not just the bench?

It’s a tremendous achievement and honour to be called up by your national squad, well done George & Good Luck .
