Jeff Cross and Matt Spedding Reflect on their work so far this season with the Under 21s

11 Feb 2016

The players we inherited as a group of lads were fantastic although some needed to adjust to the standards of senior football. There was obviously always going to be some who we felt weren’t right for what we are trying to do.

In our first four months we have had to concentrate on re-shaping the squad and changing the concept to a more mature and senior level. There have been big changes and we now only have 3 of the players that were signed on last season. We have focused on younger players with the aim of producing the first team players of the future.

This is reflected in our squad against Thamesmead on the 26th January 2016. We fielded five sixteen year olds and four seventeen year olds in our match-day squad of fourteen. Thamesmead fielded a number of first team players so we believe the experience is invaluable in bringing our youngsters through. The feedback was also extremely positive from the lads who learnt from the experience and it will only do them well as they develop.
We are totally committed to the Under 21’s and have enjoyed this season immensely. We feel that we are building something which is sustainable for the future.
