Match Reaction: Bury Town 2 – 1 Cheshunt

10 Apr 2017

Ambers boss Paul Wickenden left disappointed with his side as first half goals from Noel Aitkens and Luke Read give Bury victory.

Bury took the lead on 20 minutes when Aitkens was found in plenty of space on the right and smashed in a low strike. Bury doubled their lead on 35 minutes after James May had saved Josh Mayhew’s attempt but could not keep out Read’s follow up header.

The Ambers came into the game knowing that only a win was good enough to keep their play-off hopes alive. In the second half Cheshunt pressed more but the Bury defence stood strong until the second minute of injury time when a Joe Clemo free-kick beat everyone and ended up in the far corner.

The result gave Bury their fourth straight home win and leaves Cheshunt eighth in the table, five points behind fifth placed Phoenix Sports. Even more disappointing for the Ambers was that Harringey and Phoenix both lost, while Bowers drew.

Manager Paul Wickenden said: ‘It was one of the most disappointing games I’ve been involved in. We simply didn’t work hard enough. In this division you get punished if you don’t apply yourself.’

The Ambers have three games remaining this season. Aveley are the visitors to Theobalds Lane this Saturday (15th) before a local derby away to Ware on bank holiday Monday (17th). Cheshunt then welcome league champions Brightlingsea Regent on the last day of the season (22nd).
