Cheshunt started slowly, looking laboured in their passing & movement and Merstham took advantage to launch the first attack, a lively penalty shout was turned down and as the ball broke to the edge of the box a firm drive was well held by Charlie Taylor in the home goal. As Cheshunt got into their stride they too had a penalty claim for hand ball rejected but in the ensuing mix Ken Charles stooped to put the ball in the net, but was ruled offside. Merstham hit back and created a shooting opportunity from close range which was cleared off the line by Tom Gardiner with the keeper stranded.  The game was stop start with regular fouls from both sides breaking any rhythm. Cheshunt had two succesive edge of the box low drives pass just the wrong side of the Merstham posts from Joe Re & Taylor Miles, and Toby Bull in the visitors goal made a spectacular save ding low to scoop the ball off the line from behind him.
The away side took a lead to the break when another of those fouls saw a deep diagonal cross headed across goal  & Tahjae Anderson was queuing up to side foot home.
Cheshunt appeared to have more of the possesion as Merstham retreated deeper protecting their lead in the second half, they had the ball in the net again, but this time adjudged to have been kicked from the keeper’s hands. The Merstham defence stood their ground in the aerial battles and smothered attacks. Cheshunt’s final ball not incisive enough to open clear chances, and Merstham comfortable with the switch to more direct play. The home side forced four successive corners in injury time & substitute Yemi Ayodele went close with a header, but alas the points went south with Merstham.
