Cheshunt will finally get to host Margate in the Isthmian Premier Division on Tuesday evening with the table looking completely different to when this game should have been played previously. After months of being within a couple of points of each other, the Ambers now sit ten points above the ‘Gate.
The Hosts- Cheshunt
The Ambers come into this game off the back of three massive wins home in a row against Canvey Island, Folkestone Invicta and Carshalton Athletic. Cheshunt beat the Robins on Saturday thanks to a late first half goal from Nathaniel Orafu. The stand outs for Craig Edwards side were in the defence. Samuel Kuffour was awarded player of the match after marshalling the defence expertly, and Arsenal loanee Brian Okonkwo made some brilliant saves to keep the clean sheet intact.
Jack Roberts, a striker that joined on loan from Braintree earlier in the week made his debut on Saturday. He looked very bright and helped the team hold on to the lead. Defender Aamir Stanford Daniels was named on the bench on Saturday, the defender will be hoping to make his debut at The Lane on Tuesday.
The Visitors- Margate
The ‘Gate come into this fixture in a very poor run of form with just one win in 14 matches in 2024. In fact, they have just one win in their last 25 matches, this was a 3-2 win over Canvey Island on February 17th. They were fired to victory at Hartsdown Park by a first half Ben Greenhalgh hattrick.
Margate’s most recent match was a 1-1 home draw with Enfield Town on Saturday. An early goal for Enfield from Oliver Knight was pegged back by a late first half Steve Cawley penalty. A decent result for Margate considering they played 85 minutes with ten men.
Steve Cawley has been Margate’s top player going forward this season, netting 18 goals in 38 matches. He is a proven top striker at this level. Ben Greenhalgh continued his goalscoring form in a match against Hashtag earlier in the month, scoring a brace. He is certainly one for the defence to look out for on Tuesday,
Head-to-Head – Cheshunt vs Margate
The two teams have been very evenly matched previously. They have played each other five times recentlywith Cheshunt winning two, Margate winning one and two score draws.
The most recent fixture was at Hartsdown Park earlier in the season. Cheshunt came out 1-2 winners in August thanks to goals from Bobby Unwin and James Meehan. Both of which have since left the club, Phil Roberts was the Margate scorer that night, the former Arsenal academy player will be looking to find the back of the net again this time out.
