Both teams entered this match next to each other mid table with identical records, Carshalton Athletic emerged the winners in a fine display of football at step3.
Carshalton got on the front foot early and gave the Ambers very little time to build through their midfield, winning the ball high gave them attacking opportunities with Luke read having a header cleared off the line, and multiple opportunities blocked with last minute challenges. Cheshunt were not without opportunities, Joe Re & Zak Newton combined well for the latter to have a low cross nearly diverted into the net for an own goal, Re had a low drive well saved & Ken Charles had a free kick dipping , but not quite enough.
Jordan Cheadle broke the deadlock when Cheshunt conceded a dangerous free kick on the edge of the box, the centre half lined up a low drive in off the far post, he then continued to show his forwards the way to goal picking up a loose ball on the edge of the area minutes later & driving it top right.
Cheshunt picked up a lifeline when Lennie Armstrong threaded a channel ball into the away box & after several Cheshunt attempts Amadou Kassarate struck the loose ball goalward & a deflection saw it beat the keeper.
The second half had the feel of whoever scored first might go on to win, changes in the Cheshunt formation moved them up the pitch & the forwards became more of a threat with possesion in the final third, Newton’s runs created problems, & Ken Charles started to see more of the ball, but each time Jalen Jones was in the way, clearing in the air, and solid in the tackle, multiple times he stopped Cheshunt attacks & advanced to build the next Carshalton move.
Lewis White put the match beyond Cheshunt on the hour mark with an opportunist goal from distance when he controlled a long ball over the top from Cheadle and curled his shot around the defence into the far right corner beyond the stretching George Marsh. The Ambers continued to force free kicks & corners , but failed to beat a resolute defence, while astute substitutions from Carshalton maintained their threat up front, with Harry Ottaway leading the line.
