On the 27th May, all three of Cheshunt FC’s inclusive football teams played in the Chelsea Foundation’s disability football showcase event at Stamford Bridge. This was a well organised and well attended event which gave all our players a day to remember , giving them the opportunity to play football at such a prestigious venue in front a few hundred spectators.
The Ambers and Blacks squads went into the tournament in a confident mood having wrapped up their respective Herts Senior Inclusive League titles the week previously, both teams remaining undefeated throughout for an, “invincibles”, style season.
All games were played in the stadium in 6-a-side format at 3 ability levels, with initial group stages followed by semi-finals and a final. There was an impressive line-up of 34 teams participating, including teams from Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Bournemouth, Brighton, Millwall, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Werder Bremen, plus many more.
Our three teams performed magnificently, especially in terms of the level of opposition faced. At Premiership level the Ambers squad went on to win the top prize of the Premier Shield, beating Brighton 1-0 in the final, with a goal of the day contender from Adam Cloke, this was after dispatching Chelsea in the semi-finals via a penalty shootout. The lads deservedly getting top billing on the Chelsea Foundation webpage for their efforts. https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2018/5/27/stadium-hosts-day-two-of-disability-showcase
At Championship level, the Blacks team progressed through to the semi-final stage scoring plenty of goals along the way, but were narrowly defeated 0-1 by the eventual winners of the Championship Cup, Middlesbrough.
For the SOEH squad, it was a cruel end to the tournament, losing in the final of the League Plate on a penalty shootout, despite being undefeated in open play throughout the league stage.
We would like to pass on our thanks to the CFC Foundation for their invitation and efforts hosting this event. Twitter – @CFCFoundation
