Match Reaction: Aveley and Ware

Cheshunt suffer back to back defeats over the Easter weekend to end hopes of a play-off finish

Defeats to Aveley and Ware ended the Ambers hopes of finishing in the top five this season.

The weekend got off to a bad start on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat at home to Aveley. The visitors opened the scoring late in the first half when when Jordan Peart finished well with Cheshunt still disputing a penalty appeal when Lemar Johnson bought down Jason Hallett.

The Ambers had a chance to equalise from the spot before half-time but Johnson saved Liam Hope’s low strike. Cheshunt equalised with a Tom Bruno penalty in the 47th minute, but Aveley snatched a winner 11 minutes later when Mason Bloomfield headed home unmarked.

Cheshunt’s disappointing weekend was then made worse with a 4-1 derby day defeat away at Ware on Easter Monday. The match was closer than the score suggests with both sides giving their all. Perhaps the main difference was that Ware needed a win to help avoid the drop, whilst Cheshunt’s hopes of the play-offs were all but over.

The Ambers made some forced changes with Joe Clemo and Luke Marshall both out through injury. Ware took an early lead in the fourth minute with ex-Cheshunt player Murat Karagul volleying home from close range. Cheshunt could have equalised moments later when George Lataaya blazed over in front of an empty goal.

The equaliser did come five minutes into the second half from a trademark Jason Hallett free-kick. However an expected Cheshunt fight back did not materialise. Instead goals from Josh Oyibo, Ahmed Mohammed and Brian Haule gave Ware a deserved victory which leaves them one point away from safety.

Cheshunt welcome champions Brightlingsea Regent to Theobalds Lane for the final game of the season on Saturday 22nd April.
