Home tie in Play-offs confirmed.
Cheshunt v Westfield Match Report:
This was it, the final game of the regular league season was upon us, and it was 3rd v 5th at Theobalds Lane as Cheshunt welcomed Westfield, knowing that, depending on other scores, The Ambers could end the day in 2nd, 3rd or even 4th position. It promised to be a thriller!
Craig Edwards made three changes from Mondays terrific derby win at Hertford Town, with Anthony Furlong, Shane Cojocarel and Brian Moses all returning to the starting XI, with Hafeez Sanusi not in ‘the 18’, and Connor Hogan, along with Jordan Westcott dropping to the bench.
The Ambers got the game underway and immediately got on the front foot, Shane Cojocarel and Brian Moses were causing a strong threat with their movements, with Jason Hallett always lurking for any loose balls or little opportunities. The game had very little in the way of ‘clear cut opportunities’, with Moses coming closest for the hosts in the opening exchanges, flicking a Taylor Miles free kick just wide on the stretch at the far post. Westfield posed a threat too and Dylan Cascoe had their best chance of a rather below-par first 45 from both sides, flashing an effort wide of Harry Girling’s right hand post. With ten minutes to go until half time, the deadlock was broken by the hosts, Jason Hallett seized on a loose clearance from Dale Burnham, to slide through Brian Moses and the forward emphatically smashed the ball into the top of the net past Westfield keeper, Gary Ross, to put Cheshunt 1-0 up.
Just before the half time whistle, the Ambers had two goals ruled out in quick succession, first, Cojocarel got his toe to a Hallett knockdown but was adjudged to be offside, then, virtually 30 seconds later, Jason Hallett received the ball from a Mark Hughes ball, and smashed into the corner, only for it to again be chalked off by the linesman’s flag!
HT – Cheshunt 1-0 Westfield
The second half was almost in the same pattern as the ending of the First, with Cheshunt on the front foot looking to put the game to bed. Jason Hallett headed a corner straight at Ross before his header was excellently tipped onto the bar by the Westfield Keeper, Cheshunt were the dominant force, and Dave Kendall was next to try his luck, slicing a volley over at the far post from yet another excellent Taylor Miles corner. Edwards’ then seeked to catch out Westfield’s tiring legs with the introductions of Ashley Nzala and Jordan Westcott for Hallett and Miles. The former wasted no time in getting in on the action, with his trickery and pace a constant thorn in Westfields side, and he was rewarded for his hard work when he found himself through on goal and slotted through the legs of Ross to give Cheshunt their two-goal cushion. 2-0 80 mins. Cheshunt weren’t finished there and rounded off the scoring when Hughes smashed home a header from a Westcott corner to make it 3-0 in added time!
This result sets up the two playoff semi-finals, With the Ambers hosting Marlow, and Westfield visiting Bracknell Town.
