Recently relegated East Thurrock United met recently promoted Cheshunt at a gale swept Rookery Hill for the season opener. The Rocks came out on top of this seasons opener thanks to a blistering second half display. Cheshunt had the wind at their backs for the opening half, but it was the home side who took the lead with just five minutes played when Alex Clark latched onto a scuffed through ball and despite being three yards offside was allowed to continue to drive past Harry Girling in the Cheshunt goal. Putting the indecision of the officials to one side, what was a woryy was how easily the ball was played straight through the heart heart of the Ambers defence. The Ambers didnt have to wait long, to reply, Brian Moses levelled the scores up on 14 minutes with a thunderbolt from the left side after the Ambers pressed well to force errors in the Rocks defence..
New signing Billy Crook was instrumental in Rocks regaining the lead four minutes after the break. A great run into the box by the former Braintree and Dartford man found Frankie Merriefield who made no mistake. Cheshunt were battling to stay in touch, but fell further behind after 62 minutes when the hard-grafting Ben Marlow smashed home from the edge of the box. East Thurrock with the gale force wind behind them certainly played the conditions better than the Ambers The last goal of the game came on 75 minutes when Merryfield scored a deserved second breaking into the box he left two defenders in his wake before curling a splendid strike past Girling. Cheshunt looked decent in spells, and will have hopefully learned some important lessons from their first game back at this level.
