Quarter Final Bound.
Cheshunt FC progressed to the third round of the Hertfordshire Senior Challenge Cup as they defeated Hadley FC in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw.
Goals from Al Hafeez Sanusi and Joe Re weren’t enough to win the game in 90 minutes, as the hosts struck through Yemi Buraimoh and Nathan Linton, however the Ambers prevailed in the shootout.
After an even start to the game Hadley almost scored a spectacular opener as Yemi Buraimoh’s free-kick hit the wall, with Bradley Osborne’s follow-up volley flying just wide.
Cheshunt then came agonisingly close to taking the lead through Dave Kendall as his header from Yvan Jourdan’s corner crashed onto the upright.
Joe Re forced Hadley shot-stopper Karl Beaumont into action minutes later, cutting inside and seeing his effort saved by Beaumont low down.
The Ambers deservedly broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark after a swift break saw Yannick Kamanan feed Al Hafeez Sanusi who precisely picked out the bottom corner.
Cheshunt were in front for just two minutes as the hosts struck back with a somewhat fortunate goal, Buraimoh’s free-kick from deep catching the wind and flying over the helpless Harry Girling.
A hectic five minutes was then concluded as Cheshunt regained the lead, Joe Re shifting the ball onto his right foot on the edge of the box and curling home a terrific strike into the top corner.
Yvan Jourdan became a menace to Hadley on the right-hand side as he created four excellent opportunities in six minutes, including a terrific cross into Sanusi who had is effort superbly blocked by Sam Lyon.
The Ambers started the second-half in a similar vein to which they finished the first, Pat Adamson crossing to Kamanan who was denied by Beaumont.
Asher Silverman didn’t know how he hadn’t extended Cheshunt’s lead 10 minutes into the second-half, his half-volley hitting the inside of the upright and somehow staying out of the goal.
The hosts then stunned Cheshunt as they drew level against the run of play, the substitutes combining as Armet Rifat played in Nathan Linton who calmly slotted home.
Harry Girling had to be at his best to prevent the visitors snatching the victory in the final five minutes, Nathan Linton taking advantage of a defensive mix-up to race through on goal before Girling raced off his line to make the decisive challenge.
Both sides came close to winning the game in injury time, Sanusi hitting the crossbar from close range before Nathan Linton curled inches wide in the final seconds, however Sanusi struck the decisive penalty as Cheshunt won 4-2 in the shootout.
