MATCH REPORT: WINGATE & FINCHLEY FC 1-2 CHESHUNT FC

11 Jan 2020

A VISIT TO THE LANE EARNS THE AMBERS THREE POINTS

The Ambers completed their first double of the season with a scrappy away win at bottom team Wingate & Finchley.

From the outset it was clear both sides were conscious the losing side would be in dire trouble, both defences went safety first and generally long, leading to a lack of quality as both midfields fed off scraps and forwards were chasing 50/50 flick ons and clearances.

The opening goal came just before half time when a long throw from Mo Camara was turned inside by Ryan Moss into the path of former Wingate player Reece Beckles Richards to place his fourth goal in five games into the corner.

The home side came out with more urgency in the second half with former Amber Olu Akinsanya leading the line well and former Hertford Town midfielder Charlie Ruff (younger brother of Sam Ruff a former Cheshunt favourite) a constant threat as the most advanced midfielder.

Wingate forced four corners within a three minute spell and it was clear they were going to get a return for their endeavours. The equaliser came when Sean Grace latched onto a loose ball in a penalty box scramble, shooting goal wards, a wicked deflection taking it past the stranded Girling.

Wingate & Finchley had a penalty shout turned down when a last ditch Mo Camara tackle just made contact wth ithe ball before the man, and their frustrations grew when Akinsanya bundled the ball over the line but was adjudged offside ( He was, no VAR needed for this one)

The Ambers were awarded a penalty when Beckles Richards run into the box was eventually halted with the centre half climbing all over his back, Ryan Moss despatched the penalty with ease and from there Cheshunt closed the game out to ease 5 points clear of the bottom four.
