AMBERS INTO ROUND 3.
Cheshunt progressed to the third round of the Velocity Trophy, as they ground out a 2-1 victory over Brentwood Town on a crisp evening at Theobolds Lane.
A first-half brace from Yvan Jourdan proved to be enough for Cheshunt, despite Brentwood pulling a goal back late on courtesy of Harry Larke.
After seeing his side make it six games without defeat, Cheshunt Manager Craig Edwards said: “I was very pleased with the first-half, but very disappointed with the second. I felt we should have been further ahead at half-time, but afterwards complacency and poor decision-making set in.”
Brentwood Town were able to fashion a couple of good opportunities early on, as Alfie Hilton twice fired wide of the upright in the space of two minutes.
However, it was Cheshunt who broke the deadlock, Ricky Sappleton slipping in Yvan Jourdan, described as a “constant threat” by his manager, who calmly dinked the ball over Brentwood ‘keeper James Pellin.
Pellin had to be at his best to prevent Cheshunt from doubling their lead, Bradley Woods-Garness finding space to turn before being denied by a superb save.
The Ambers did get the crucial second goal just before the interval, as Woods-Garness was able to flick the ball onto Yvan Jourdan who rifled the ball home from a tight angle for his second of the night.
Sappleton then had the first clear-cut chance after the break, glancing his header wide from George Casey’s delivery.
Brentwood were able to match their opponents in the second-half, and Harry Doyle came agonisingly close to pulling a goal back as he flicked the ball over from inside the six-yard box.
Cheshunt had chances to put the tie to bed, Sam Kifwasima showing great ball control before shooting wide across goal.
KIfwasima was involved once more as he delivered a terrific cross to Olu Akinsanya, but he failed to hit the target from close range.
With less than five minutes remaining the visitors were handed a lifeline as substitute Harry Larke stole in behind and slotted home past Harry Girling, however it was ultimately too little too late as Cheshunt saw out the closing minutes.
