U23s runners up in intermediate cup

'Silverware not far away' as U23s lose out to AFC Oaklands in the final of the Herts Intermediate Cup

Goals from Spencer Cleland, Sam Aylott and Taylor Blake ended the U23s hopes of lifting silverware this season, marking the end of a fantastic run to the final for the young Ambers. But U23s managers Jeff Cross and Matt Spedding are confident that it will not be long before their young ambers will be winning trophies.

Cleland opened the scoring for the Herts Senior County League leaders mid-way through the first half with a wonderful strike from the edge of the box. Tiago Lopez levelled the score early in the second half but moments later Aylott headed home from a set piece before Blake added a third that ended a Cheshunt fight back.

Co-manager Jeff Cross said: “We are extremely proud of the players for reaching the final after playing in 5 previous rounds. Going in to the final we were in good form, winning a number of tough league games, but in all honesty we didn’t perform as well as we could on the night. Perhaps nerves and the occasion just got the better of us.”

“However, we cannot be too despondent, we had seven under 17 players in the squad, with the average age being just below 18. Playing against older players in this cup run and in the final itself has been great for the development of the players and bodes very well for the future. The players should be proud of the achievements and I’m sure if we all keep working hard silverware won’t be that far away.”
