Wickenden is working hard!

06 Jun 2017

Cheshunt manager Paul Wickenden has been busy plotting for next season and says that like most managers the summer period for him is as unrelenting as the season itself.

“It’s a privilege to be the manager here and I genuinely love doing what I do. As soon as the season ends I start work on the next season and for me the summer is a vital time. I have to make decisions on the existing squad and whether or not there are players who need to be released, I also need to consider who needs to be brought in and in what areas should I strengthen.”

“Last season was too up and down for my liking and I don’t think that we achieved the level of consistency I would have wanted. We started well and had a couple of good spells but we had too many periods where results were way below expectations and more annoyingly our capability’.

“I can’t give too much away just yet as we haven’t concluded all our negotiations but I can say I am extremely optimistic that we will have players here retained on contract and also that there will be some exciting new arrivals”

Paul added “I want a situation within the squad next season where the competition is extremely strong amongst and importantly I want the sort of players who thrive on fighting for their place. I am looking at players who will bring the sort of character and leadership to the club that will bring us success”.

‘”There wasn’t a player in the squad last year who wasn’t disappointed that we didn’t do better in the league and I want them to take that disappointment and turn it into a positive; if we can achieve that and fit in more players who have the determination to succeed we will have the right mixture”.
